What Does an Eye Exam Entail?

When you visit us for a comprehensive eye exam, our priority is to ensure you feel comfortable. We will start with a lengthy discussion about your family health history and current eye health and answer any questions you may have.

Our staff will guide you through the entire exam process to experience nothing but honest advice and friendly service.

Why Do I Need an Eye Exam?

The early stages of common eye diseases often do not show easily identifiable symptoms. So, it is crucial to have your eyes examined at regular intervals so your optometrist can pinpoint warning signs of conditions that may threaten your vision.

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends adults between the ages of 19 and 64 attend an eye exam at least every 2 years. They also recommend individuals over the age of 65 visit their optometrist for an exam annually.

At Calgary Family Eye Doctors, we begin by building a relationship with you and your family to best monitor your ocular health. We recommend you visit us at least once a year for the best chance of detecting the early stages of eye disease.

What Tests Are Involved?

Our doctors perform a few basic evaluations to check the health and function of your eyes. These include:

Your doctor will use a slit lamp microscope to examine the surface and internal aspects of your eye. With this tool, they can detect any abnormalities or signs of possible diseases, such as diabetes or hypertension.

tonometer will be used to test the internal pressure of your eye or intraocular pressure. High intraocular pressure can be a sign of glaucoma or other degenerative eye diseases.

At Calgary Family Eye Doctors, we use the ICare Tonometer. This means no puff of air in your eye! This helps to keep your eye exam as comfortable as possible.

Visual acuity testing assesses how well you see.

The most common test used is a standard letter chart, called a Snellen chart, where we will get you to read lines of letters at a certain distance. We may also combine the letter chart with a phoropter to determine what prescription lens is required to correct your vision.

We will also examine your peripheral vision and how well your eyes work together (binocular vision).

Prescriptions & Treatment

If you require corrective eyewear, we can discuss what type you are interested in. You can browse our excellent selection of frames and lenses to choose from to find the perfect pair of glasses.

If contact lenses are preferable, we will perform a thorough contact lens exam and fitting to ensure we find the type that will work best for you.

If early signs of eye disease are present, we will discuss the appropriate next steps to begin treatment and management.
