Helping You Maintain Clear Vision

Cataracts are a progressive condition that occur naturally as a result of the ageing process. They are caused when the natural lens in the eye begins to cloud over and obstruct vision. The cloudiness can be a tiny part of the eye or large opaque areas that obstruct vision entirely.

Cataracts typically begin to appear after the age of 60 and are likely to happen to almost everyone. However, children can be born with cataracts, which are called congenital cataracts. They often develop very slowly and are not painful. A full comprehensive eye exam can help pinpoint early signs of cataracts.

Symptoms of Cataracts

Some common symptoms of cataracts include:

  • Blurry or foggy vision
  • Decreased night vision
  • Seeing “halos” around lights
  • Colours appearing dull or muted
  • A sensation of a “film” covering your eye
  • Increased sensitivity to light

Prevention & Treatment

Although there is no sure-fire way to prevent cataracts, you can slow their progression by adopting healthy habits for your eyes. Things like protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays and eating foods rich in antioxidants can keep cataracts from developing too quickly.

Treating cataracts in the early stages will typically involve new lenses for your glasses to give you the clearest possible vision. If they develop to a point where glasses or contacts no longer provide clear vision, we can refer you to an ophthalmologist for surgical removal.

Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded lens in your eye and replacing it with a clear, artificial lens. Depending on your unique situation, the implanted lens may provide clear enough vision that you will not need glasses or contacts.

We will help co-manage the treatment of your cataracts if surgery is a good option for you.
